B2B SEO

Off-Page SEO for B2B That Starts With Relationships You Already Have

Manufacturers, distributors and B2B service firms sit inside a network of suppliers, partners, associations, registers and trade media that already know them. Most of it never links to them, describes them accurately or surfaces them when a buyer asks an AI assistant for suppliers. I fix that first.

Free and without obligation. I read every request myself.

Key takeaways

  • Off-page SEO for B2B covers links, trade press, distributor and partner pages, certification registers, industry directories, review platforms and how AI answers describe you.
  • The best B2B links usually come from existing relationships: suppliers, distributors, customers, trade associations, certification bodies and trade show organisers.
  • Buyers increasingly ask AI assistants for supplier shortlists, and those answers lean on directories, trade press and review platforms where your details must be accurate.
  • Links should point at the pages that win business - application, capability and product family pages - not only the homepage.
  • Paid guest posts, private blog networks, link exchanges and low-quality directory packages are risks with little upside in B2B.

What's included in my off-page SEO for B2B

Relationship links first, because they are cheap, relevant and safe; assets and press second, where the relationships run out. Every tab ends in a named page to link to, not a link count.

A relationship map of the suppliers, distributors and bodies that know you

A short session with sales, purchasing and marketing lists the raw material suppliers, distributors, trade associations, certification bodies, shows and publications you already work with. Each gets a status - links correctly, links to a dead page, mentions without linking, or absent - and the person who owns the relationship.

  • Suppliers, distributors and technology partners listed
  • Associations, registers, shows and trade titles included
  • Current link status for each relationship
  • An owner named for every request

Lost and broken links reclaimed after domain, platform or naming changes

Manufacturers that have changed domain, platform or product naming usually have links pointing at pages that no longer exist. A backlink audit finds them, and redirecting those URLs to the right current page recovers value without outreach. Unlinked mentions in trade press and partner sites get a polite request for a link.

  • A backlink audit with lost and broken links
  • A redirect list for old URLs that still carry links
  • Unlinked brand mentions found and followed up
  • Wrong company names and details corrected

Distributor and partner links that point at product families, not homepages

'Where to buy' pages, brand pages and product listings on distributor sites are often the most-clicked B2B links you have. I ask for links to the matching product family or datasheet page, with your brand or product name as the anchor, and move sitewide footer links onto the relevant brand page instead.

  • Target page named for every distributor
  • Brand or product name anchors, not keyword phrases
  • Footer links moved to brand or product pages
  • Supplier showcase and case study pages pursued

Trade press angles built from data and stories only manufacturers hold

B2B PR does not need national headlines; a piece in the trade title your buyers read is worth more. Angles that get picked up: anonymised trends from your own orders and quotes, practical explainers when a regulation changes, application stories told with the customer's permission, product launches with specifications rather than adjectives, and your engineers available for expert comment.

  • A pitch calendar around launches, shows and regulation changes
  • Data angles drawn from your own orders and quotes
  • Application stories with customer permission
  • Engineers offered for expert commentary

Reference assets that engineers bookmark and industrial forums cite

Where relationships run out, I brief one or two linkable assets tied to priority clusters: chemical compatibility charts, thread and neck finish guides, unit converters, glossaries of trade terms or a cost calculator. They are slow to build but earn links for years if maintained, and they come out of your content strategy for B2B.

  • Briefs for one or two assets per year
  • Each asset tied to a priority cluster
  • A maintenance owner so the asset stays accurate
  • Pitched to trade titles and associations

A vetted prospect list where every B2B link has a plausible reader

Is the site real and relevant, does it have actual readers, would a buyer plausibly click the link? Sites that sell links to anyone or exist mainly to host them are dropped. Requests then come from the person who owns the relationship, with the exact page and suggested link ready, which works far better than cold outreach.

  • Relevance and readership checked for every prospect
  • Target page and approach for each
  • Link sellers and networks excluded
  • Sponsored placements marked as sponsored

Mention, AI answer and referral tracking for buyers checking suppliers off-site

Buyers ask AI assistants for supplier shortlists, and those answers lean on directories, registers, trade press and review platforms. I check whether you appear, which sources are cited and what the answers get wrong, then fix the source data. Referral traffic and leads are tracked by link source and landing page, so you see which links send buyers.

  • AI answer checks for priority supplier prompts
  • Register and directory details matched to your site
  • Trade press mentions tracked over time
  • Referral traffic and leads by link source

What I build and what I refuse

B2B sites carry long-lived domains and established reputations. Cheap link schemes risk both for very little gain.

I build

  • Links from real suppliers, distributors, customers and partners
  • Association, certification and trade show listings with correct details
  • Trade press coverage based on news, data or expertise
  • Reference assets that engineers and buyers cite naturally
  • Reclaimed links pointing to old or broken URLs

I refuse

  • Private blog networks and expired-domain link farms
  • Paid guest posts on unrelated 'business' blogs
  • Link exchanges and reciprocal partner pages created only for links
  • Bulk directory submission packages
  • Sponsored content without the required link attributes

FAQs

Off-page SEO for B2B FAQs

How many links does a B2B site need?

Fewer than most people expect, if they are relevant. B2B search results are often less competitive than consumer markets, and a handful of links from trade bodies, partners and trade press can move a product family page. Counting links is less useful than checking whether the right pages are earning links from sources your buyers trust.

Should we pay for directory listings?

Only where buyers actually use the directory to find suppliers. Thomasnet in North America and established sector directories can produce enquiries. Bulk packages that submit you to hundreds of generic directories do not help and can create problems. I check whether each directory appears in your priority search results and whether it sends traffic before recommending payment.

Can our distributors' links hurt us?

Normal distributor links will not. Problems arise only with unusual patterns, such as sitewide footer links with exact-match keyword anchors on large sites. A link from the relevant brand or product page, using your brand name, is the healthiest setup and the most useful one for buyers.

Is trade press coverage worth the effort?

Usually yes. Trade titles are read by the people you sell to, their sites are relevant to your industry, and their articles often rank for the topics they cover. Editors want specifics: new materials, application stories, data and expert comment. Generic press releases about company milestones rarely get picked up.

Do sponsored articles in trade media count as link building?

They can be good marketing, but paid placements should carry the sponsored or nofollow attribute, as search engines require. That means they help with visibility and referral traffic rather than rankings directly. I treat them as a media decision, not a link tactic, and I will not recommend hiding the paid nature of a placement.

How long does off-page SEO for B2B take to show results?

Reclaiming lost links and fixing distributor and association listings can show within weeks of being recrawled. Trade press and linkable assets take longer, often several months. Results show first in rankings for the target pages and in referral traffic, then in enquiries.
