What Is Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO)? A Plain-English Guide
Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is the practice of structuring your content so a search engine extracts your text as the direct answer to a question, in a featured snippet, a People Also Ask box, an AI Overview or a voice reply.
AEO targets the single extracted answer on a results page, not a ranked position and not a brand recommendation inside a chat assistant.
Answer surfaces include featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, passages cited in Google AI Overviews and spoken voice replies.
Google chooses featured snippets itself; there is no markup that makes a page a featured snippet, so structure and clarity do the work.
The core AEO habit is putting a short, complete answer directly under a heading that matches how people phrase the question.
Winning the answer can cut clicks on simple facts, so the best AEO targets are questions that need more depth than one paragraph.
Answer engine optimisation is the work of getting your text chosen as the answer, not just listed as a result.
When someone asks Google a question, the reply often sits above the links. A featured snippet. An expanded People Also Ask box. A passage inside an AI Overview.
AEO is how you make that reply come from your page.
In this guide you will learn:
What AEO is, and what it is not
Which answer surfaces it targets
How it differs from SEO and GEO
A five-step process to start
What Is Answer Engine Optimisation?
Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is the practice of structuring web content so search engines extract it as the direct answer to a question, rather than just ranking the page as a link.
Here's a simple example.
Imagine someone searches "how long does a boiler service take". Say one page gets quoted at the top with a single line: "A standard boiler service usually takes under an hour."
That page did AEO, whether it meant to or not.
It put a short, complete answer right under a question heading.
What AEO is not
AEO gets confused with two neighbours, so let's be clear:
It is not GEO. Generative engine optimisation is about being named and recommended by chat assistants such as ChatGPT. AEO is about being the extracted answer on a results page.
It is not a replacement for SEO. Search engines quote pages they already index and trust. AEO shapes sections on those pages.
It is not schema stuffing. Google says you cannot mark a page as a featured snippet. Markup alone wins nothing.
Which Answer Surfaces Does AEO Target?
AEO covers every place where a search engine shows one reply instead of a list.
Surface
What it shows
What it needs from your page
Featured snippet
A quoted passage from one page, shown before the normal results
A direct answer in the format Google shows for that query
People Also Ask
Related questions that expand into short quoted answers
Clear question headings with a concise reply under each
AI Overview passage
A generated summary with linked supporting pages
An indexed, snippet-eligible page with self-contained passages
Voice reply
One spoken answer from an assistant
A short, plain answer that sounds natural read aloud
Search Console queries that start with how, what, why or can
Questions your sales team hears on calls
Group your questions by topic. Each group usually maps to one of your pages. A proper keyword research pass makes this faster.
Step 2: Check who holds each answer now
Search each question yourself.
Note whether a snippet, PAA box or AI Overview appears, and whose page it quotes.
The best targets are questions where you already rank on page one but someone else is quoted.
You have the trust; you just need the clearer answer.
Step 3: Put the answer first, under a matching heading
Turn each question into an H2 or H3 on your page.
Then answer it in your first sentence or two.
Write it like a dictionary entry: name the subject, give the answer, no warm-up.
Detail and caveats come after.
This is section-level on-page SEO, and it is where most of the gains come from.
Step 4: Match the format Google already shows
Some questions get a paragraph. Some get a numbered list. Some get a table.
Whatever format the current answer uses is your best hint, so copy the shape, not the words. Steps become a numbered list. Comparisons become a table. Definitions stay a short paragraph.
Use structured data where it describes your page truthfully.
Do not add it for decoration.
Google's documentation changelog shows FAQ rich results stopped appearing in Google Search from May 2026, and HowTo rich results were removed back in 2023.
So FAQ markup is no longer a visibility trick on Google.
Then track a fixed list of questions monthly.
Record who holds each answer, and watch your Search Console clicks for those queries.
When Does Winning the Answer Cost You the Click?
Here's the uncomfortable part.
If your snippet fully answers a simple question, many people will not click. "What time does the tip open?" needs one line.
Questions that need depth behave differently. "How do I choose a structural engineer?" can be summarised, but the reader still wants the full guide.
So I prioritise questions where a quoted answer naturally leads somewhere:
Processes with several steps
Comparisons that depend on the reader's situation
Costs that vary by factors
Decisions that need a specialist
Simple fact questions are still worth answering clearly.
Just do not expect them to drive enquiries.
Start With the Questions You Already Rank For
AEO is not a new channel.
It is a sharper way of writing the pages you already have.
Your first action: export Search Console queries containing "how", "what" or "why", filter to positions one to ten, and check who holds the answer for the top twenty.
Answer engine optimisation is a part of SEO, not a replacement. It relies on pages that are already crawlable, indexed and ranking, then shapes individual sections so a search engine can lift them as the answer. Without the SEO foundations, AEO has nothing to work with, which is why I always check indexing and rankings first.
What is the difference between AEO and GEO?+–
AEO is about your text being extracted as the answer on a results page, such as a featured snippet or an AI Overview passage. GEO, generative engine optimisation, is about your brand being named, recommended or cited by chat assistants like ChatGPT and Perplexity. AEO is mostly page structure; GEO is mostly reputation and entity clarity.
Does schema markup help with answer engine optimisation?+–
Schema helps search engines understand a page, but it does not win the answer on its own. Google says there is no way to mark a page as a featured snippet and no special schema is needed for AI Overviews. Google also stopped showing FAQ rich results in May 2026. Use schema where it describes the page accurately.
How long does answer engine optimisation take to work?+–
Rewrites to pages that already rank on page one can change who holds a featured snippet within weeks, once Google recrawls them. Questions where you do not rank yet take longer, because the page has to earn a position first. I track a fixed list of questions so progress is visible question by question.
