Yoast vs Rank Math: Which SEO Plugin Should You Use in 2026?

In the Yoast vs Rank Math choice, Rank Math's free plugin lists more built-in tools, including redirects and internal link suggestions. Yoast keeps those for Premium but leads on writing analysis, update cadence and bundled extensions. Neither ranks a site by itself.

Key takeaways

  • Rank Math's free listing includes a redirection manager, a 404 monitor and internal link suggestions; Yoast lists its redirect manager and linking suggestions as Premium features.
  • Yoast's free plugin names readability and inclusive language analysis alongside SEO analysis, plus llms.txt management and crawl settings.
  • Yoast Premium includes its AI tools with no credit top-ups, while Rank Math's Content AI runs on usage credits.
  • Both plugins output schema, XML sitemaps, breadcrumbs and canonicals, and Rank Math offers a one-click import from Yoast.
  • The plugin matters less than how you configure it: indexing rules for archives and post types decide more than which brand is installed.

Both plugins are good. Both are used on millions of sites. And both get blamed for problems that are really configuration mistakes.

I set up both regularly, so this comparison sticks to what each plugin's own pages say it does, checked in October 2026. Where a page is vague about which tier a feature sits in, I say so.

Here's what I compare: free features, content analysis, redirects, schema, AI tools, ecommerce and local, switching, and price.

Yoast vs Rank Math at a Glance

The short answer: Rank Math packs more into its free plugin. Yoast has the larger install base, more writing guidance and a simpler paid offer with AI included.

Here's how the two compare, based on each plugin's WordPress.org listing and pricing page:

Feature Yoast SEO Rank Math
Active installs (WordPress.org) 10+ million 4+ million
Focus keyphrases Up to 5 in Premium 5 by default, more via a filter
Readability analysis Yes, plus inclusive language analysis Not listed as a separate feature
Redirect manager Premium Listed in the free feature set
404 monitor Not listed Listed in the free feature set
Internal linking suggestions Premium Listed in free; AI Link Genius in PRO
Schema Free, with more types in Premium 16+ types listed; 20+ and a schema builder in PRO
XML sitemap, breadcrumbs, canonicals Yes Yes
llms.txt Free Listed on the free vs PRO page
IndexNow Premium Instant Indexing module using IndexNow
AI tools Included with Premium, no credits Content AI, runs on credits
Import from the other plugin Built-in import tools One-click import from Yoast

The rows that decide most choices are redirects, internal linking and price. Readability matters if you have writers who aren't SEOs.

Rank Math Gives You More in the Free Version

If you only compare free plugins, Rank Math lists more tools.

What Rank Math's free listing includes

The Rank Math WordPress.org page lists, among others:

  • A setup wizard
  • 16+ schema types
  • Up to five focus keywords by default
  • Google Search Console and Google Analytics integration
  • A redirection manager and a built-in 404 monitor
  • Internal link suggestions
  • A role manager
  • Automatic image alt text and title attributes
  • A module system so you can switch off what you don't use

That's a lot for nothing.

What Yoast keeps for Premium

The Yoast SEO WordPress.org page lists its redirect manager, smart internal linking suggestions, social previews for Facebook and X, IndexNow and extra crawl options under Yoast SEO Premium.

So if you want redirects from your SEO plugin without paying, Rank Math covers it. With Yoast free, you'd add a separate redirect plugin.

Free features winner

Rank Math, on breadth. Choose Yoast free anyway if you'd rather keep your SEO plugin simple and handle redirects with a dedicated tool.

Yoast Leads on Writing Guidance

Yoast's analysis is built around the writer, not just the SEO.

Yoast's content analysis

Yoast's listing names three analyses in the free plugin: SEO analysis, readability analysis and inclusive language analysis. It supports 20+ languages and uses its familiar red, orange and green scoring.

It also includes SERP previews for desktop and mobile, HowTo and FAQ blocks with schema, and cornerstone content tools.

Premium adds up to five keyphrases and a Google Docs add-on, so writers can run the analysis before content reaches WordPress.

Rank Math's content analysis

Rank Math's listing leads with "30+ SEO tests" and "detailed content analysis with actionable SEO recommendations". It also mentions LSI keyword suggestions.

It doesn't list a separate readability score in the same way Yoast does.

Content analysis winner

Yoast, if you have a team of writers who need plain guidance on sentence length and structure.

Rank Math, if you mainly want an SEO checklist per post. Either way, the checks only cover the basics of on-page SEO.

One caution for both. A green light is a checklist, not a ranking. I've seen plenty of all-green posts that never ranked, and red-light posts that did fine because they answered the query well.

Rank Math Bundles Redirects and 404 Tracking

Redirects matter more than most people realise. Every deleted page, changed slug or merged post needs one.

Rank Math redirects

Rank Math lists a "Smart Redirection manager to create redirects at scale" and a "Built-in 404 monitor" in its main feature set. Its free vs PRO page describes the redirection module as supporting 301, 302, 307, 410 and 451 redirects, plus regex. PRO adds bulk actions, including redirects.

Yoast redirects

Yoast Premium's redirect manager has bulk tools, CSV import and export, and prompts you to create a redirect when you move or delete content.

That prompt is genuinely useful. It catches the redirect at the moment someone would otherwise forget it.

Redirects winner

Rank Math for cost, since redirects come without a paid plan. Yoast Premium if your editors delete and move content often, because the automatic prompt prevents broken links rather than just reporting them.

Whichever you use, keep a record of what redirects where. During a redesign, that list becomes your redirect map.

Both Handle Schema, Rank Math Goes Deeper in PRO

Both plugins output structured data automatically, so a basic site is covered either way.

Yoast schema

Yoast's free plugin outputs Schema.org data and says Premium adds "significantly more schema types". Premium also includes schema aggregation for NLWeb, which combines your structured data into one graph.

Rank Math schema

Rank Math lists 16+ schema types in its main listing, including Article, Course, Event, FAQ, Job Posting, Local Business, Product, Recipe, Service and Video.

Rank Math PRO adds 20+ predefined types, an advanced schema builder, schema templates, conditional schema and importing schema from other websites.

Schema winner

Rank Math PRO for sites that need custom or conditional schema without code.

For a standard business site, both free versions do the job. If you need one-off markup, the schema markup generator fills gaps for either plugin.

AI Tools Work Differently

Both plugins now sell AI features, but the pricing model is different.

Yoast AI

Yoast says its AI tools come with Premium, with "no separate AI subscription, no extra login, and no credit top-up to buy". The tools include:

  • Yoast AI Generate: five title and meta description options
  • Yoast AI Optimize: keyphrase placement suggestions
  • Yoast AI Summarize: a short summary block for posts
  • AI Content Planner: five post ideas and a starter draft

The bulk editor itself is free. Premium adds AI drafts inside it.

Rank Math Content AI

Rank Math's Content AI advertises 40+ AI tools, including AI alt text and an assistant called RankBot. You can start for free.

Rank Math's own disclosure section says Content AI checks your remaining usage credits. So heavy use depends on your credit allowance.

Rank Math also lists a newer AI Visibility feature for tracking how ChatGPT and Gemini mention your brand.

AI winner

Yoast, if you want predictable cost with AI included. Rank Math if you want a wider set of AI tools and don't mind credits.

Either way, review every AI title before it goes live. Use my guide to writing title tags as the standard.

Ecommerce and Local SEO

Rank Math

Rank Math lists WooCommerce SEO with automatic schema and meta tags, and local SEO tools, in its main feature set. PRO adds GTIN and MPN schema including on variations, removing the product and category base from URLs, and automatic noindex for hidden products.

Yoast

Yoast Premium includes its Local SEO, Video SEO and News SEO extensions at no extra cost. Yoast WooCommerce SEO is a separate product that builds on Premium, with a store-specific sitemap, product structured data and ecommerce-focused content checks.

Ecommerce and local winner

Rank Math for stores on a budget. Yoast for publishers who need news and video features in one bundle.

For larger stores, the plugin is the small part of the job. My WooCommerce SEO guide covers the rest, and WooCommerce SEO support picks up what a plugin can't.

Integrations and Setup

Both plugins slot into the tools most WordPress sites already run, but the lists differ.

Yoast integrations

Yoast's listing names integrations with Google Site Kit, Advanced Custom Fields, Elementor, Semrush for keyword research, Wincher for rank tracking, Algolia, Jetpack and WooCommerce.

For developers, Yoast documents a REST API, a Metadata API and a Schema API. That matters on custom builds, where the theme needs to read or change SEO data in code.

Rank Math integrations

Rank Math lists native Elementor and Divi integration, support for WPML, Weglot, TranslatePress and Polylang, AMP, and bbPress and BuddyPress.

It also names theme support for Astra, Kadence, OceanWP and others, plus builders such as Oxygen, WPBakery and Beaver Builder.

Setup

Both have a setup wizard. Rank Math's is more detailed, which helps if you know what each setting means and hurts if you don't.

Here's the catch with any wizard:

It sets sensible defaults for a generic blog. Your archives, custom post types and taxonomies still need a deliberate decision, which is the technical SEO side of plugin setup.

Integrations winner

A draw. Pick the plugin that supports your page builder and translation plugin natively, then check the rendered HTML to confirm it.

Pricing Compared (Checked October 2026)

Prices below are exactly as shown to me on each vendor's site in October 2026. Currency may differ depending on where you view the page, and both exclude VAT.

Plan Price shown Sites
Yoast SEO Premium $118.80 per year Not checked
Rank Math PRO €7.99 per month, billed annually, renewing at €8.99 per month Unlimited personal sites; client sites excluded
Rank Math Business €24.99 per month, billed annually, renewing at €27.99 per month Up to 100 client sites

Sources: the Yoast SEO Premium page and the Rank Math pricing page.

Note the renewal prices on Rank Math. The first-year figure isn't what you'll pay every year. Agencies should also note that Rank Math's PRO plan excludes client sites.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose by the features you'll actually use, not by the longest list.

Choose Rank Math if:

  • You want redirects, a 404 monitor and internal link suggestions without paying
  • You need advanced or conditional schema and don't want to write code
  • You run a WooCommerce store and want product schema extras
  • You manage several of your own sites on one licence

Choose Yoast if:

  • Your writers need readability and inclusive language guidance
  • You want AI tools included in one price, with no credits
  • You publish news or video and want those extensions bundled
  • You value a plugin with a long track record and a two-week update cycle

Stay where you are if:

  • Your current plugin is configured well and nothing is missing. Switching costs time and risks errors for no ranking gain.

Pro tip: If you do switch, crawl your site before and after. Compare titles, canonicals, robots tags and schema page by page, then deactivate the old plugin.

Pick One, Then Configure It Properly

The honest verdict: the choice between Yoast and Rank Math rarely decides whether a site ranks. The settings inside them do.

Whichever you pick, set index rules for every post type and taxonomy, clean up thin archives and make sure only one plugin writes your tags. My WordPress SEO checklist walks through all of it.

If you'd like help choosing or setting up either plugin, my WordPress SEO service covers plugin configuration as part of a wider review. You can also see how I approach SEO plugin setup and archive clean-up before getting in touch.

Frequently asked questions

Is Rank Math better than Yoast?

Neither is better for every site. Going by each plugin's own pages, Rank Math's free version includes more tools, such as redirects and internal link suggestions. Yoast offers stronger writing analysis, a two-week update cycle and Premium extensions for local, video and news. Choose on the features you will actually use.

Can I switch from Yoast to Rank Math without losing my SEO settings?

Rank Math lists a one-click import from Yoast, which brings across titles, descriptions and other settings. Before switching, take a crawl of your titles, canonicals and robots tags, then compare after the import. Deactivate the old plugin once you have checked, so the site never outputs two sets of tags.

Can I run Yoast and Rank Math at the same time?

You should not. Two SEO plugins usually write duplicate titles, canonicals, sitemaps and schema, which sends Google mixed signals. Run one SEO plugin and switch off any overlapping SEO features in your theme or page builder as well.

Is the free version of Yoast or Rank Math enough?

For many small business sites, yes. Both free versions handle titles, descriptions, sitemaps, schema, breadcrumbs and canonicals. Paid tiers make sense when you need features like Yoast's redirect manager, Rank Math's rank tracker or advanced schema builder, or bulk AI-generated metadata.
