Seen by plenty of searchers, chosen by very few. 160% more monthly clicks.
I picked up SEO for a Canadian counselling practice in July 2025. It was turning up in Google, just far too low for anyone to click. A year later, monthly clicks were up 160%, and both ends of that comparison sit in the practice's quiet summer season. From February 2026 onwards, every month stayed comfortably in four figures.

Buried on page four
When I took the account on, the practice offered one-to-one therapy plus sessions for children and teenagers, partners and whole households, face to face, over the phone or by video, to one Canadian city and the area around it, with plans to see clients virtually across the province. Monthly clicks had sat flat all summer, at a few hundred a month.
Visibility was not really the issue; depth was. August 2025, the first complete month on the account, brought a few hundred clicks from around 96,000 impressions, averaging a position near 34. That is page four, where almost nobody clicks. The client wanted organic search to pull far more of its weight.
Working from the client's own brief
My record for this practice is what the client wrote down at the outset, not a dated log of tasks. So here is that brief, and how I held the numbers against it.
- 01
Map the services to the people
Four kinds of counselling, three ways to attend, and an audience running from adults and young adults to parents worried about a child, partners and whole households. Each of those groups searches in its own words, so the brief named all of them, and search had to speak to each rather than to counselling in general.
- 02
Benchmark against nearby practices
The client listed eight other counselling practices in the same area to compare against. That gave a concrete local yardstick for how the site stood, rather than an abstract target, and kept attention on the practices a prospective client would actually weigh up before booking a first session.
- 03
Match the tone to the reader
For articles, the client asked for writing that was friendly, educational and warm, with no clinical jargon. Someone deciding whether to see a therapist at all is often reading at a hard moment, so tone mattered as much as topic and was part of the brief from the very first conversation.

Flag drops and read the calendar
The client wanted a partner who would suggest changes as standards moved and raise the alarm on any big fall in traffic. They also warned that July and August run quiet, with demand returning in September. So I compared slow month with slow month.
A year on
July 2026 brought 160% more clicks than August 2025, with both months ones the client had flagged as slow. March 2026 was the high point at about 1,800. Taken together, the six months from February to July earned 130% more clicks than the six that came before them.
Monthly impressions rose roughly 100% between October 2025 and July 2026, and average position improved from about 20 to 16. Comparing the first three months from autumn 2025 with the last three of the year, clicks rose about 140% and daily impressions about 70%.
